Trainer's Table- Keys to a Successful Diet
Tips for starting your diet
Whether you are starting an intense new training program or are just making some changes to your basic meal plan, starting a new diet can be stressful and difficult. That’s why so many diets fail almost as soon as they start. The trick to succeeding is planning ahead and being prepared to handle the rough spots. If you are planning some changes in your diet in the near future, here are a few tips to get you started off on the right foot.
Think Positive- If you think you are going to fail, you are going to fail. Begin your diet with a positive outlook and mentally prepare yourself for the challenge ahead. Staying positive and committed to your diet is the hardest part, and being mentally strong will help you succeed and get past the rough spots instead of giving up.
Plan Ahead- Map out what you hope to accomplish in your diet. Plan your meals ahead of time and be realistic when you set goals. Allow yourself enough time to meet your goals, and don’t be disappointed if everything isn’t going perfectly at first. Successful diets take time to get started.
Don’t Skip Meals- Skipping meals will make you weak, sluggish, and cranky. You need regular meals to keep your metabolism fired up so that you will have energy for the day. Keep healthy snacks like granola bars or fruit close by so you don’t miss a meal, and plan your meals in advance so you can anticipate your nutritional needs.
Plan Your Workouts- Don’t just say “I am going to exercise tomorrow.” Have a specific workout planned and try to get a friend to join you. This will help keep you motivated and will make it harder for you to back out on your training. Also, mix up your workouts with different activities in various locations so you don’t get burned out by doing the same thing over and over.
Reward Yourself- Have a day or two a week where you let yourself give in to cravings and cheat a little on your diet. Rewarding yourself for your hard work every now and then will prevent you from getting diet burnout and will also give you something to work towards every week. Just don’t go overboard.
