Wrestling Tips- Leg Take-downs
Exercise these tips to improve and increase your wrestling take downs.
It’s the key to successful wrestling: the take down. Before you can pin and opponent you must bring them to the mat. Here’s SIP’s tips on how to execute the double and single-leg take downs.
The double-leg take down
Before you shoot and go for the take down, it’s important you first set up your opponent. One of the most common and effective methods is to fake or feint a shot and while your opponent is re-establishing his base, shoot with all you’ve got. Dive deep into between your opponent’s legs so that you’re literally past his body but the most effective way to shoot is to be touching your opponent.
The key is to rip at your opponent to take their legs out from under them and then dive to either your left or your right to throw off your opponent’s balance.
Some varieties of the double-leg include lifting, slamming and pushing forward with the shoulder while pulling your opponent’s legs.
The single-leg take down
This take down is similar to the double-leg except here you’re shooting for one of your opponent’s legs. While shooting, grab their leg and pull it close to your body and force their upper body down to the mat. Usually the lower part of the leg is pulled in one direction while the torso or shoulder is used to press the upper part of the leg in the opposite direction.
Some types of single-leg take downs include: ankle picks and high crotch.
